When life feels stretched thin and the weight of responsibilities presses down, finding moments of sacred rest becomes essential. This past week, my family and I intentionally stepped back from the rush to embrace rest through faith, returning to God in moments of overwhelm and stretching. Our experience reminded me how powerful it is to honor the Sabbath lifestyle, overcome spiritual exhaustion, and practice presence with those we love.

Returning to God in Overwhelm and Stretching
The week began with a sense of tension. Between work deadlines, family commitments, and the usual demands of life, I felt the familiar pull of exhaustion creeping in. Instead of pushing through, I chose to return to God in prayer, seeking His guidance and peace. This return wasn’t just a quick prayer but a deliberate pause to reconnect spiritually.
On Father’s Day, our family gathered in prayer to thank God for the gift of my husband. We honored him not only as a father but as a man who carries the weight of work and family with grace; not perfectly but purposefully. This moment of collective gratitude grounded us and reminded me that sacred rest is not just about physical stillness but spiritual renewal.
Honoring the Sabbath Lifestyle in Our Home
One of the most meaningful parts of our week was honoring the Sabbath lifestyle in a way that felt authentic to our family. Instead of imposing a rigid day of rest, I invited Randell, my husband, to choose his day to rest. When he felt physically exhausted, I gently but firmly encouraged him to stay home and rest, even if it meant saying no to outside plans.
This respectful boundary-setting was a small but powerful act of love. It showed that rest is not optional but necessary for health and spiritual well-being. By prioritizing rest through faith, we created space for healing and renewal that work and busyness often steal away.
Finding Stillness in Simple Moments Together
Resting as a family doesn’t always mean grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the quiet moments that bring the deepest peace. Randell and I spent time holding hands, laughing, watching movies, and even taking naps in the middle of the day. These simple acts of stillness brought a peace that surpasses understanding.
In those moments, I felt the tension of the week melt away. The Sabbath lifestyle isn’t about doing nothing, but about doing what restores the soul. For us, that meant slowing down enough to enjoy each other’s presence without distractions or agendas.

Practicing Presence in Quiet Prayer
One of the most profound experiences came in the early morning hours. At 3 AM, I found myself drawn to slow, quiet prayer. In the stillness of that hour, answers and clarity came in ways I hadn’t expected. This practice of presence—being fully attentive to God without distraction—helped me overcome spiritual exhaustion and find renewed strength.
This sacred time reminded me that rest through faith is not just physical but deeply spiritual. It requires slowing down enough to listen, to be still, and to receive the gift of God’s peace. The clarity I gained in those moments, surrendering all I could have worried about, in exchange for trusting that by praying and inviting God in, I could walk lighter, carrying less of the burden.
Practical Tips for Embracing Sacred Rest in Your Life
If you feel stretched and overwhelmed, here are some practical ways to embrace sacred rest and honor the Sabbath lifestyle:
Set clear boundaries around your rest time. Let family members choose their day to rest and respect those choices.
Create moments of stillness with simple activities like holding hands, sharing laughter, or watching a favorite movie together.
Return to God in prayer during moments of overwhelm. Even brief, intentional prayers can bring peace.
Practice presence by dedicating quiet time for slow prayer or meditation, especially during early morning or evening hours.
Recognize rest as a spiritual discipline that helps overcome spiritual exhaustion and supports a Godly work-life balance.
By weaving these practices into your routine, you can create space for peace and presence in your family life.
