The True Meaning of Sacred Rest: Finding Connection Over Distraction

Rest is something we all crave, especially when life feels overwhelming. But how often do we mistake distraction for true rest? Scrolling through social media, binge-watching shows, shopping, or even sleeping all day might seem like rest, but they rarely restore our souls. Sacred rest is different. It reconnects us with God and renews our spirit in a way that mere distraction cannot.

Today, I want to explore how to recognize the difference between rest and escape, and how to embrace sacred rest that truly refreshes us.

Understanding the Difference Between Rest and Escape

Many of us fill our downtime with activities that feel restful but actually keep us from true restoration. These distractions might temporarily take our minds off stress, but they don’t heal or refresh our souls.

Here are some common distractions mistaken for rest:

  • Scrolling on phones or social media

This often leads to mental clutter and comparison, increasing anxiety rather than reducing it.

  • Binge-watching TV shows or movies

While entertaining, it can become a way to avoid facing emotions or spiritual dryness.

  • Shopping or other busyness

These activities can feel like a break but often leave us more drained or restless.

  • Sleeping excessively without purpose

Sleep is vital, but oversleeping can be a form of avoidance rather than restoration.

True rest is not about filling time with anything that feels good temporarily. It is about pausing to reconnect with God and ourselves.

How to Recognize Sacred Rest

Sacred rest invites us to slow down and be present with God. It is a spiritual practice that refreshes our hearts and minds. Here are signs you are experiencing sacred rest:

  • You feel a deep sense of peace, not just tiredness fading.

  • Your mind quiets instead of racing with worries.

  • You sense God’s presence and comfort.

  • You gain clarity and renewed strength to face responsibilities.

  • You experience joy and gratitude, even in small moments.

The Bible reminds us in Matthew 11:28-30 MSG:

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

This passage shows that sacred rest is a gift from Jesus, a deep soul-rest that comes from leaning into Him.

Practical Steps to Embrace Sacred Rest

If you feel tired but can’t stop, or if rest feels like a luxury you don’t deserve, try these steps to move from distraction to sacred rest:

1. Create a BreakAWAY Moment

Set aside 10 minutes without your phone or any screens. This simple act removes distractions and allows space for quiet.

  • Find a comfortable spot.

  • Close your eyes or gaze softly.

  • Breathe deeply and slowly.

  • Invite Jesus into this moment.

2. Sit with Jesus Before Reaching for Distraction

When you feel the urge to scroll or distract yourself, pause and ask:

  • Am I truly resting or avoiding something?

  • Can I bring this moment to Jesus instead?

This practice trains your heart to seek God first, not distraction.

3. Practice Gentle Stillness

Sacred rest often looks like stillness. It might feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you’re used to constant activity.

  • Try sitting quietly with a scripture or prayer.

  • Listen for God’s voice or simply rest in His presence.

  • Let go of the need to “do” and just “be.”

4. Set Boundaries Around Rest Time

Protect your rest by setting limits:

  • Turn off notifications.

  • Say no to extra commitments when you need rest.

  • Schedule regular times for sacred rest in your week.

5. Reflect on Your Rest Patterns

Notice what activities refresh you and which drain you. Adjust your habits to include more sacred rest and less distraction.

Why Sacred Rest Matters for Women Who Lead and Serve

As women who juggle many roles—whether in ministry, education, nonprofits, entrepreneurship, or corporate life—we often carry heavy loads. We feel responsible for so much that slowing down feels risky. But sacred rest is essential for sustainable leadership and spiritual health.

When we rest in God, we:

  • Renew our strength to serve others well.

  • Find clarity in decision-making.

  • Experience joy beyond productivity.

  • Grow deeper in faith and trust.

Rest is not a reward for finishing tasks. It is a vital part of our identity as beloved children of God.

Moving Forward with Sacred Rest

If you are tired but keep pushing, remember that sacred rest is available to you today. It is not about doing more or achieving rest through busyness. It is about coming to Jesus with your weariness and letting Him carry your burdens.

Try the BreakAWAY moment now: put your phone down for 15 minutes, sit quietly, and invite Jesus into your rest. Spend five minutes of gratitude, five minutes of presence, and five minutes of reflection. Notice how this small step can begin to shift your heart from distraction to true restoration.

Your soul needs this sacred rest. It is a gift waiting for you to receive.
